![]() As lovingly told by Matt’s parents, Kevin and Chris Myers:
"For those who are striving to better themselves, to help and serve others and to love in their own way in the midst of life’s trials.”
Matthew Brent Myers — a name known by some and, in time, many more, who will forever be associated with perseverance, endurance, self-discipline and strong character. Ordinary in the things he did with his time but extraordinary in what he knew to be the priorities in life. Matt was a faithful young man who had a passion for music — a gift he shared as an accomplished guitarist — and a spirit for running, a discipline to strengthen his body and focus. Stride by stride, from junior high to the last days of his life, Matt dedicated himself to a life of physical fitness and spiritual and mental growth. In Matt’s pursuit to understand his purpose in life and his future, he came to know he would serve and be of help to others in some capacity. Knowing that education would be paramount to his success, Matt pursued higher education at Cal Poly Pomona. After overcoming a setback, he returned to campus as a newly declared communications major in the fall of 2005 with a clearer direction of his path. But as life’s road is filled with turns and intersections, visions of Matt’s future have now been left to us, and to all who participate in this race, to complete. On October 6, 2005, as Matt, age 20, attempted to cross Kellogg Drive as a pedestrian, he was struck by a vehicle and never recovered from head trauma. Matt understood what it meant to walk with others in difficult times as needed and to run proficiently as experience and strength allowed. He grew to understand the need for support through these times and the importance of living and dying with purpose. Donations made to The Matthew Myers Memorial Fund will help establish a scholarship devoted to his spirit of helping others. With your participation in the Matthew Myers Memorial 5K Walk/Run, you will help support the Matthew Myers Scholarship, designed to help those determined to walk their course in the midst of difficulties. Help us to run or walk the course that is mapped out before us, and in so doing, help students who have encountered transitions and adversity while trying to achieve an education. Enable Cal Poly Pomona students to pick up their pace and run to the finish line. Thank you for sharing Matt with others. |
